Being overweight develops in early childhood – and persists

Scientists at Leipzig University Children’s Hospital show in their recent study that early childhood is critical for the development of overweight and obesity. They analysed the weight curves of more than 51,000 children from birth to adolescence. The result is clear-cut: almost 90 per cent of children who were overweight at the age of three years remained overweight as adolescents. The strongest weight gain in this group occurred at preschool age between two and six years. The results have now been published in the renowned New England Journal of Medicine.
